Her house has been filled with all sorts of companion animals for two decades and yet there’s one snuggle monster who is the most in-your-face when seeking some loving. ![]() Karen Stephenson echoes these sentiments. It makes no difference whether she’s awake or not! ![]() His frequent less-than-stealthy move is to climb up onto her pillow and start climbing around her head for attention. In addition to being a real purr machine, MoMo the orange tabby cat seeks affection every waking hour from Amy, and then some. Photography courtesy Karen Stephenson.Įvery cat is an individual, but orange cats have a reputation for being snuggly attention lovers. Tiger is an orange tabby cat who loves to be loved. Orange tabbies are known for being Velcro cats. “When we rescued him 11 years ago, his constant loud purring could be heard throughout the house.” His name is fitting, and even more so today: “MoMo hasn’t stopped purring since we got him!” 6. “He’s the most affectionate and happiest cat,” says Amy. Guess who won anecdotally “most gregarious?” Of course, every cat’s personality is different, but Amy Wester has lived with many different cats over the years, and “MoMo” short for - you know it! - MotorMouth, is a testament to the findings. National Geographic reports that personality is tied to a cat’s coat color. Depending on the orange tabby’s parental décor choices, this may or may not be the case for the modern tabby. This is seen in all types of tabbies, so it’s not just the orange kitties that boast these cool peeper accouterments! Tabby stripes are probably predominant because of their camouflage properties, so it’s most likely that the markings helped them hide in the wild. One of the most distinctive markings on the orange tabby cat is the “M” above his eyes. What does that orange tabby cat “M” stand for? But males only need the orange gene from their mothers. Hence, a female orange tabby cat requires the sire and the dam to pass on the orange genes. Females possess two Xs and males possess XY. The X chromosome is responsible for the orange coloring. And it’s not some sort of magic - it’s genetics. While it’s true that a higher percentage of orange tabbies are male, the ratio is actually about 80 percent male to 20 percent female. So, while all orange cats are tabbies, not every tabby is orange. Even if their stripes are faint, they’re there. Go ahead, Google “orange cats” – they’re all tabbies. An orange tabby cat with an “M” marking on his forehead. ![]() And there are five different tabby configurations: classic tabby, mackerel tabby, spotted tabby, ticked tabby and patched tabby. It’s not specifically an orange cat breed, but the color and pattern of their coat. Specifically, the presence of stripes denotes a “tabby” cat. Tabby is actually a coat pattern, not a breed. They’re infinitely fascinating felines, so here are eight fun facts about the awesome orange tabby cat! 1. But, as anyone who’s lived with an orange tabby cat can attest, it’s really their personalities that make them stars. Their big, bold and brightly colored coats is one reason. Morris and Garfield are just a few of the iconic orange tabby cats that are part of our culture’s collective cat consciousness.

It reminds us that we all know what the good life is it is so simple to live it, but of course, there’s the inevitable collision with the fact that what is simple isn’t always easy. The Cynic philosophy of Diogenes is so simple that it throws the gauntlet down before us. That being said, the mythologised figure of Diogenes puts one in mind of an old Zen master who has no time for nonsense and is only concerned with truth. One lesson that comes to mind is the proverbial wisdom of the Irish saying, “never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” The stories of Alexander the Great and Plato fall into the category of larger than life and while entertaining and inspiring they certainly leave one wondering about their veracity. There is much to be learned from the life of Diogenes. Status and money are just distractions from what really matters. Trim away the unnecessary things in life and all that is left, all that matters is wisdom-be virtuous and you are living the good life. This simple dedication to virtue is Diogenes in a nutshell. “That orators were anxious to speak justly, but not at all about acting so.” “That the musicians fitted the strings to the lyre properly, but left all the habits of their soul ill-arranged.” “One of his frequent sayings was, ‘That men contended with one another in punching and kicking, but that no one showed any emulation in the pursuit of virtue.’” We see this conviction in philosophy’s simplicity running through Diogenean anecdotes and sayings: ![]() The Cynics took the Socratic conviction that virtue was sufficient for the good life and dedicated themselves to it. Diogenes’ teacher was a philosopher called Antisthenes who was in turn a student of Socrates. All this puffed up intellectualism went the same way as his old cup. “That mathematicians kept their eyes fixed on the sun and moon, and overlooked what was under their feet.”Ī man once proved to him syllogistically that he had horns, so he put his hand to his forehead and said, “I do not see them.” And in a similar manner he replied to one who had been asserting that there was no such thing as motion, by getting up and walking away. We still have a lot of quotes and examples of his disdain for intellectual pageantry. Diogenes took simplicity to an extreme that more than justifies Plato’s jibe that he is a Socrates gone mad. This simplicity applied not only to his material circumstances but to his intellectual philosophy. The liberation from slavery to the bodily appetites allowed Diogenes to be free from submission to others. “If you would only have washed vegetables, you wouldn’t have to be subservient to Dionysius.” “If you had only paid court to Dionysius you wouldn’t have to wash your vegetables” Plato, seeing Diogenes eating his supper of lentils and bread remarks that: In another anecdote we have - and one of the many Plato-related anecdotes - Diogenes is approached one evening by the great prince of philosophers. The two endeavours were inherently connected. He was determined to be free not just of society’s demands upon him but even of his body’s demands on his soul. Diogenes more than exemplifies this principle. Cynic comes from the Ancient Greek meaning dog and this has been attributed to the fact that its members lived like dogs. Our modern word cynic derives from this ancient school of which Diogenes is the most famous philosopher. ![]() In winter, you could find him hugging icy statues and walking barefoot in the snow, while in summer you could find him rolling in hot sands.Īccording to many sources, this is where the term Cynicism comes from. He put his body through rigorous training to put up with the elements. This simplicity of living demanded a strong dose of self-control from Diogenes. Even this proved too luxurious one day, when he saw a boy drinking water from his hands he threw away the cup saying the boy had outdone him in simplicity. His possessions amounted to a cloak, a walking stick, a cup and a wallet to store food in. He shunned all possessions, status and wealth and strived to live a life of ascetic simplicity. When he first came to Athens, he took up residence in an upturned wine cask in the agora - the marketplace of Athens. ![]() Diogenes ruthlessly applied this simple rubric to every aspect of his life. Simplicity manifests itself in two intertwined ways in the philosophy of Diogenes-the philosophical and the physical.įor this godfather of Cynical philosophy, living the good life is easy - it’s just a matter of stripping away all the bullshit, of cutting away everything that is unnecessary. ![]() The adoption of Apple and Google Pay mobile wallet pass utilization is also increasing rapidly thanks to behavior accelerated by the pandemic. WALLET PASS LOYALTY LAUNCH WELL TIMED WITH CONTINUED GLOBAL GROWTH OF MOBILE WALLET USE WITH APPLE AND GOOGLE PAY As we believe the Mobile Wallet is the way of the future for the retail customer experience, we are now very excited to provide a new digital loyalty and rewards member card and the truly first-of-a-kind personalized experience for our liquor retail and hospitality customers, by way of the mobile wallet.” As Barnet is a forward-thinking technology provider of leading-edge retail services, we are very proud and excited to have integrated our solution with Fobi and now go live to our entire existing customer base. It is truly remarkable to see how their diverse retail technology is able to move so quickly in efforts to solve fundamental problems, yet also transform with leading edge technology such as the mobile Wallet pass technology. Nick Ricci, President of Barnet Technologies stated, “It has been a great collaboration working with the team at Fobi AI. The powerful Fobi Hub backend enables retailers to deliver real-time personalized marketing and promotions directly to the mobile wallet pass, based on each individual shopper’s past purchase history. In addition to the Fobi wallet pass technology, Bevy Pass will also feature Fobi’s PassPro Hub portal which is an AI powered shopper data intelligence platform. The retailer can also use geofencing to push a notification to their customer’s lock screen when they are near the store, encouraging them to come in and redeem their points. This is a significant enhancement of the current in-store retail customer experience, and digital wallets are much more secure than physical wallets thanks to encrypted transactions and biometric protection, as described in this recent article. Using Fobi’s new digital Wallet pass solution, the customer simply shows the QR code on the digital member card, the cashier scans it and the points are automatically credited to or deducted from the customer’s loyalty account. Currently, an end-user who is part of an existing retailer loyalty program who wants to collect or redeem points at a physical liquor retailer through the Barnet POS system needs to provide their name and cell phone number to the cashier, which is personally identifiable information that they must share publicly, and which the cashier needs to input correctly. Fobi will generate revenue through a one-time set up and onboarding fee as well as a monthly SAAS model.ĭigital Wallet passes from participating retailers provide easy and immediate access for customers to their loyalty points, stored value credits, e-gift cards or stamp card functionality. Furthermore, retailers can promote new signups and acquire new customers through their social media, advertising, in store digital signage and printed QR codes. Customers will then simply accept the terms and conditions by selecting “add to wallet,” which will simply and easily add the new digital loyalty pass into their mobile wallet which comes pre-installed on all iOS and Android phones worldwide. Retailers will push an onboarding link by way of email or text through their Barnet POS or other CRM system to their current customers. Following the company’s previous strategic partnership announcement with Barnet Technologies on February 3 rd, 2022, and as a result of the successful integration with Barnet POS, Fobi and Barnet now support an all-new “one-tap” digital loyalty membership program powered by the mobile wallet. Otto Sverdrup wrote that during the Fram expedition, a pair of wolves shadowed one of his teammates, who kept them at a distance by waving his ski pole. The wolves on Ellesmere Island do not fear humans, which is thought to be due to them seeing humans so little, and they will approach humans cautiously and curiously. The Arctic wolf is relatively unafraid of people, and can be coaxed to approach people in some areas. Wayne furthermore stated that he believed the habitat in which the wolf happened to be found was a good enough characteristic to distinguish a subspecies. Arctic wolves could be distinguished by having three wolves in the putative population with a specific SNP, whereas another subspecies could be distinguished by having 20 wolves with that SNP. Wayne, mentioned he disagreed with the conclusion that a subspecies had to be genetically distinct, believing that different subspecies could slowly grade into each other - suggesting that although it was impossible to determine if an individual wolf was one subspecies or the next using DNA, the population of Arctic wolves as a whole could be distinguished by the looking at the proportions of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP): i.e. During a meeting assembled in 2014 by the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, one speaker, Robert K. (2012) using autosomal microsatellite DNA and Mitochondrial DNA data indicate that the Arctic wolf has no unique haplotypes which suggests that its colonization of the Arctic Archipelago from the North American mainland was relatively recent, and thus not sufficient to warrant subspecies status. Both wolves are recognized as separate subspecies of Canis lupus in the taxonomic authority Mammal Species of the World (2005). He also attributed the name Canis lupus orion to a Greenland wolf specimen from Cape York, northwest Greenland. He wrote that similar wolves could be found on Ellesmere Island. In 1935, the British zoologist Reginald Pocock attributed the subspecies name Canis lupus arctos (Arctic wolf) to a specimen from Melville Island in the Queen Elizabeth Islands, Canada. Queen Elizabeth Islands region (QEI) divided into five major areas by apparent importance to arctic-island wolves. ![]() But I wanted to approach these different looks from an emotional and character perspective rather than just a period-accurate perspective. Of course, when filming a period drama, everyone interprets how these different decades should look based on history, culture, films, photographs and experiences. I wanted the different decades to have distinctive looks, although we did not want the different periods to be too radically different. Unfortunately, COVID and other factors prohibited us from using as much haze or smoke as we wanted.Ĭan you give more detail about the looks you established for each time period? When it comes to period stories, smoke/haze also plays a part, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. Our 1970s interiors, the 1980s apartment in Seattle, and the 1980s news station were built on stages in Vancouver, BC. One of the main differences is that we built more sets this season instead of relying so much on location shooting, which we did in Season 1. We also briefly introduced the 1990s as another timeline on the show that had its own style. Season 2 has some very strong dramatic moments, and we introduced new plots that required their own style of shooting. We had created a style and look in Season 1 through lighting, framing and camera movement that we carried on this season. The Panaspeed spherical primes are a high-speed, large-format companion to 35mm-format spherical Primo optics. I have used Panavision Primos extensively in my career when shooting with spherical lenses, but they are very popular and weren’t available for us last season. I used Panaspeeds while on the TV series Maid, and they have become one of my favorite lenses. These weren’t available for us when we started filming last season. We had Cooke S4s in Season 1, and we moved to Panavision Panaspeeds this season. ![]() And having just the one voice behind the camera allows for a very unified and consistent flow throughout the episodes.ĭid anything change significantly from S1 to S2? What were the challenges (or benefits) of being the only DP?īecause I was the only cinematographer on the show, I didn’t really have time to prepare episodes with the upcoming directors or scout locations properly, but we tackled this show as a long feature film, with a specific look that would change between all the different timelines. But I had enough time to develop the look and style I had in mind. When I was hired for the job, some of the real locations had already been chosen, so sadly, I didn’t have much input on those, and some have proven to be quite challenging logistically. All these memories and experiences were a key factor in how I saw this story from a teenager’s perspective. I remember growing up in Spain with my best friend and how everything back then was about creating adventures, exploring life, dreaming about the future. I also connected with this story a lot I need to have a connection with the stories I am working on. We could cover many topics as the background of our story and emphasize how things have changed for women regarding equality and rights from the ‘70s to today. I thought it was a fascinating story about friendship with American culture and history as our canvas. We clicked right away while talking about the look and style I had in mind for the show. I met with showrunner Maggie Friedman early on, when there was just one pilot script. How early did you get involved, and how did that help? You were the sole DP on Season 1 and Season 2.
